The Last Supper

Jesus is explaining that His body and blood will be given for the forgiveness of sins, and He invites His disciples into a new covenant relationship with God.

The bread represents His body, which would soon be broken on the cross.

Not literally His physical body at that moment

  • Symbolic, but deeply real in meaning
  • He is saying: “My life will be given for you.”
  •  Jesus is showing that His suffering is intentional, sacrificial, and for our salvation.

The cup (wine) represents His blood, which would be shed the next day.

Jesus calls it:

“My blood of the covenant”

This refers to:

  • A new covenant between God and humanity
  • A covenant sealed not with animal sacrifices (Old Testament)
  • But with Jesus’ own blood, once for all

Why blood?   In the Bible, blood represents life given. Jesus is saying: “My life is the sacrifice that brings forgiveness.”

This is the heart of the gospel.

Jesus is explaining:

  • His death is substitutionary
  • He is taking the penalty of sin
  • Forgiveness is now available through Him
  • Salvation is not earned — it is received through faith

This fulfills Old Testament prophecies like Isaiah 53.

“I will not drink again… until I drink it new with you”

This is a promise of the future.

Jesus is saying:

  • He will die
  • He will rise
  • He will return
  • There will be a future celebration in God’s kingdom

This points to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:9).

It’s a promise of:

  • Hope
  • Reunion
  • Eternal life
  • The kingdom of God fully realized
